Possibly because, at least in the version I have, combat was hideously micromanaged to the extent that it was almost a wargame. Hex movement, manoevres, far too many combat options and so on. Spirit combat was OK, but they missed the point. I can't remember much more about it, as my copy is in a folder at least 2 feet away, which is too far to dig out.
