You have inspired me to create an aphorism:
Any system can be deadly if the GM wants it to be.
:D
The thing is, even in RQ this wouldn't have happened (assuming the GM didn't
cheat). A heavily armed and armored, relatively experienced, high-HP death
knight taken out by one or two hits from a pitchfork wielded by a mere
farmer? Even if the farmer criticalled, the death knight's hit points and
CON should have allowed him to avoid instant death.
Ah, Rurik. I miss him. You know, one thing that particularly impressed me
about the RQ2 books and supplements was that the illustrative text was so
well written. That's very unusual for RPG fiction!
