Well of course it is a quest .. perhaps for mystical evolvement perhaps
to find the right bit of magic / science or the non-existant female dwarve
which will enable it.

hmmm you need something climactic to enable this I think if it is a
part of the character concept ... so that it will feel like an appropriate
development
