Well, the truth is, RQ3 "barbarians" weren't; most Middle Age 
cultures were "barbarians" by the standard of that book.  They were 
simply the mostly-static cultures that weren't as advanced as the 
"civilized" cultures found in places like Rome, Byzantine, most of 
China and the like.  They weren't what most people think of as 
"barbarians" at all, other than perhaps at the lower end.
